“Pekopeko (ペコペコ) is a Japanese saying that means the sound an empty stomach makes (from the verb hekomu, へこむ, meaning caved in) gives us a way to say “I‘m hungry” (Onaka ga peko peko, お腹がペコペコ).”
When one is hungry one must eat and in Japan, you either end up consuming at first glance or you can take your time to find the perfect little shop and appreciate the entire process. The same goes with how the Setouchi Triennale is intended to be and how the journey to visit each installation wants you to take in the environment and absorb everything with all of your senses and then boom, your interpretation of what it is is whatever you want it to be.
Above is 20th Century Recall by Hagetaka Funjo and what it’s intended to be is an installation that symbolizes the age of discovery. And below is whatever you make it out to be.To be continued.
